At dusk, when the room smelled of orange peels and rain on the sill, Tavi pressed both feet around his perch and stared at the silver bell. Every evening it rang once, though no claw touched it. Tavi wanted the sound to stop before the shadows climbed the cage bars, but his beak would not go near the chain.
Then a moth slipped between the leafy branches outside the bars, pale as paper in moonlight. “That bell is not calling you,” she whispered. “It is listening.” Tavi’s feathers prickled. He took one small sidestep, then another, until his beak nudged the cool rim. Ting. The sound opened the room like a tiny key, and from under the table came a soft answering chirp: a new budgie, hidden in a travel box.
Tavi rang again, louder this time. Ever since that night, pet birds have kept little bells in their cages, so a brave small sound can find the next friend waiting in the shadows. Next time you see the bell beside Tavi’s leaves, can you guess which ring was his first?
