Every evening, Toby lined up the cones, plopped the ball in the grass, and set the big red helmet by the sideline. Thump, thump, shuffle—everything had its spot. Until one day, the helmet hummed like a bumblebee in a drum.
Because of that, Toby crouched close and heard a tiny voice say, “Kickoff is waiting!” Because of THAT, the grass whooshed tall around him, the white yard lines glowed, and a team of cricket players marched out carrying acorn whistles. Toby tucked the ball beside the helmet and called, “I’m ready!” Finally, under the buzzing lights, he snapped the ball, ran where the crickets cheered, and knew the sideline had saved his spot all along.
