🎨 How to color it

Color the fox rusty orange with a creamy white belly, the leaf-pattern umbrella in teal and golden yellow, and the puddles a pale rainy blue. Use sharp colored pencils for the umbrella’s small leaf sections and fur strokes, then switch to broader side-strokes for the slanting rain and open hills. Try making every puddle ring a little darker near the fox’s feet, as if each step is sending secret ripples outward.

The story behind this coloring page

Elowen Counts the Raindrops — Under the reed roof, Elowen tapped her claw on an acorn cup: plink, plink, plink. Read the full story →

Under the reed roof, Elowen tapped her claw on an acorn cup: plink, plink, plink. She had set herself a private challenge—find seven different puddle-sounds before the rain stopped—and she had only counted two. The meadow beyond smelled of wet bark and cold petals. “No one has to know,” she whispered, lifting her big patterned umbrella and stepping out.

First came a fat splat by the mushrooms. Then a tiny tick beside the tulips. At the third puddle, mud squeezed between her toes with a rude glorp, and that was the price of the game: one soaked paw, then two. Elowen nearly turned back. But two birds on a bare branch chirped the fourth sound, and the daffodils nodded at the fifth. By the deepest puddle, her umbrella drummed so fast it seemed to be keeping secrets.

She raised one foot and stamped. Bloooop! The sixth sound rolled in rings. The seventh was softer: her own laugh, mixed with rain. She carried that sound home in her chest instead of the acorn cup, and if you follow the puddle rings next time, you might hear Elowen’s plink, plink, plink.
