Under the warm seat, Pip kept a tiny silver bell. Ting-ting, it whispered when the train rocked. Pip wanted to hear it at the hill stop, where the air smelled like soft grass.
Chug-chug, Pip stepped out and walked beside the rails. A sleepy signal bird drooped on a post. Pip gave the bell a little ring. “For you,” Pip said. The bird blinked, cozy and calm. Pip rode back with empty hands but a full, hushy heart. Next time you see the little flags, maybe you can hear ting-ting too.
