🎨 How to color it

Try maple tan for the court, burnt orange for the center basketball, navy for the two painted keys, and sky blue inside the three-point arcs. Use a ruler or the edge of a scrap paper to keep the long sidelines and center stripe crisp, then switch to a sharp pencil for the dashed free-throw circles. For a fun twist, shade each half of the court in a slightly different warm tan so the center ball feels like the meeting point.

Under the west station, Bren ran the court-line route every day, bouncing a burnt-orange ball from one platform door to the next before the 4:10 train roared in. The floor smelled like raincoats and pretzels, and each painted stripe gave his sneakers a clean slap-slap-slap. He wanted to make the perfect end-to-end bounce before the doors chimed.

Then one day, the center circle opened like an eye, and a girl in a silver conductor cap popped up. “Wrong court,” she said, grinning. “This one connects to all the others.” Because of that, Bren chased his ball through a gust of tunnel wind into a court where the top key led to the bottom key like a secret bridge. Because of that, every kid waiting for a train heard the thump-thump-thump and joined, passing the golden bounce across platforms.

At last, Bren sent one huge bounce down the middle stripe, and the silver-capped keeper rang the departure bell like a buzzer. If you trace the center line next time, can you find where Bren’s shared bounce slipped from one platform door to the next?
