Beyond the tack room door, a strip of silvergrass flashed on the far hill like a fish scale in sunlight. Nell needed one sprig to finish the stable map before the afternoon bell, but the far paddock lay past the steep turn where the fence posts leaned and creaked. She tightened her gloves, breathed in leather and clover, and urged Rowan onto the bridle path.
The wind combed Rowan’s mane as the hills opened around them. At the leaning fence, a gray pony stood alone, wearing no saddle, no rider, only a tiny brass bell tied to its halter. When it stepped onto a narrow sheep track, the bell made one clear clink. Nell followed, though brambles scratched her boot and left a green smear on her sock. “All right,” she whispered, “but no tricks.”
The track curled behind a hedge and ended beside the brightest silvergrass Nell had ever seen. Under it lay an old wooden trail marker, half buried, pointing back to the stables by a safer way. Nell took one sprig and brushed dirt from the sign. Next time you trace the fences and winding road, see if you can find where Nell first heard that one clear clink beyond the tack room door.
