🎨 How to color it

Try a teal jersey with a bright white number 8, orange basketball stripes, silver-gray hoop, and leafy green park trees behind the bench. Use sharp colored pencils around the crisscross net and sneaker laces, then fill the wider court lines with smooth marker strokes. Add a sunset fade behind the backboard so her swinging ponytail and moving ball feel extra fast.

Before practice whistle, Vera tapped the ball once, twice, three times, inventing a game called Secret Eights. She wanted to make the ball answer on the eighth bounce with a sound nobody else could hear. The court smelled like warm rubber and cut grass, and the chain net clicked in the breeze like teeth keeping a secret.

On bounce seven, the ball struck a painted crack and leaped sideways. Vera chased it past the bench, where two older kids had stopped whispering. “Don’t stop,” one called, too softly for the coach. Vera caught the ball, spun back, and bounced it hard: eight. The hoop gave a tiny tin-ring, though the ball was still in her hand.

That is why, ever since, playground hoops listen hardest for the eighth bounce before a shot. If you ever count along at a court, don’t tell everyone right away—see whether the net keeps the secret first.
