Every afternoon, Henry tapped the courtyard stones and counted the castle flags before the supper bell: “One, two, three!” The wind smelled like pine trees and chimney smoke, and his boots made clack-clack sounds. His challenge was to count without looking twice.
Until one day, a knight’s helmet in the grass said, “Four.” Henry jumped so hard his pencil flew into a bush. Because of that, he peeked under the helmet and found a tiny cricket wearing a thread cape. Because of THAT, the cricket demanded to be counted as a flag, since his cape flapped beautifully.
