🎨 How to color it

Color the clapboard house pale blue, the shingled roof slate gray, the front door cranberry red, and the leafy tree fresh green. Use sharp crayons or colored pencils for the small roof shingles, window curtains, flower petals, and stone path so each little shape stays clear. Try making the chimney smoke a very light lavender and the wreath on the door a circle of alternating greens.

Before the first tulip opened, Elian set himself a tiny challenge: he would take forty-two slow breaths before unhooking the garden gate. The porch swing creaked hush-hush in the morning air, and warm smoke curled from the chimney with a toast smell. At breath seventeen, a sparrow landed on the mailbox. At breath thirty, the curtains fluttered like sleepy hands.

His fingers waited on the latch. The gate wanted to squeak open, but Elian whispered, “Not yet.” When breath forty-two floated out soft as milkweed, the latch clicked all by itself. Ever since, that house has kept the number 42, because it knows doors open sweetest after a gentle wait. If you visit the gate, can you spot the patient little number still keeping watch?
