Behind the tall house, Juno dipped her brush into a bucket that smelled sharp and sweet. She wanted to make the blank wall clap with color, so she invented Whisper-Stripe: one friend hid a tiny painted line, and the others had to find where it belonged. “Psst—no peeking until the roller hums,” she said.
Up the ladder, Rafi rolled the paint: zzzip, zzzip, neat as ribbon. Juno’s brother Nix held a rag and laughed when the first stripe matched the next, and the next, all the way across the boards. The house seemed to stand taller in the warm sun.
By supper, every board wore its own straight stripe, made by their own hands. That is why clapboard houses have lines ever since—secret places for Whisper-Stripe. Can you spot where Juno might hide the very first one?
