Every evening, Bixby bounced at the front of the Peppermint Plaza parade, keeping one dull sugar key tucked under his cuff. Tap-tap went the drumsticks, swish-swish went the pine garlands, and Bixby always touched the key before the first candy cane cart rolled out. It looked like a crumbly little thing, but it had been baked with the first batch of plaza gingerbread.
Until one evening, the cart wheels spun wild, and candy canes shot across the bricks like red-striped rockets. Because of that, the ornament lanterns swung and clanged. Because of THAT, the tiny cookie house at the corner puffed cinnamon smoke from its chimney. “The door is stuck!” squeaked a gingerbread helper. Bixby leaped, slid, and pressed the sugar key into the frosting lock. Click! The house door flew open, warm vanilla air whooshed out, and every candy cane rolled neatly home. If you spot Bixby holding the parade together, you’ll know exactly where that little sugar key belonged.
