🎨 How to color it

Give the kingfisher a teal-blue back, a rusty orange chest, a slate gray beak, and fresh green leaves around the creek. Use sharp colored pencils for the layered wing feathers and tiny fish scales, then switch to light side-strokes for the long, curving water ripples. Try making the ripples darkest near the bird’s beak, as if the creek is holding a secret right there.

The story behind this coloring page

Beside Bendy Creek, Zinny kept a dull coat button under one claw and leaned toward the water’s glassy hush. She wanted to tap the button on the perfect ripple before the minnows noticed. Plink would be easy. Plonk would be louder. But her beak hovered, and the creek smelled of mud, minty leaves, and daring.

The button was not shiny, not pretty, and not even round anymore. To Zinny, it was a brave little moon, found the day she first perched without wobbling. She lowered it closer. A fish slid up with one wide eye and blew a bubble that sounded exactly like, “Bloop.” Zinny snorted so hard the branch tickled her toes.

Then the fish flipped over, showing a pale spot on its side shaped just like the missing chip in Zinny’s button. The minnows had been waiting for a doorbell! Zinny tapped once—plink—and bubbles raced through the creek like giggles under glass. Next time you spot that fish below the branch, see if it is still daring Zinny to ring again.
