🎨 How to color it

Layer the koala in soft ash gray and cream, give the eucalyptus leaves blue-green and olive tones, and color the fluffy blossoms pale lemon with coral-tipped stamens. Use sharp pencils on the narrow leaf veins and flower clusters, then switch to gentle circular shading for the koala’s rounded ears and belly. Let a few gum nuts shift from dusty rose to warm brown so the branch feels tucked into a living, fragrant canopy.

Before dawn, when the arboretum smelled of rain-wet bark and crushed mint, Sella carried a smooth twig under her chin, the last thing her mother had pressed there. She searched for a fork that did not shrug her away: ironwood too cold, paperbark too loose, fig leaves whispering like strangers. At the old eucalyptus, the twig warmed against her throat; she tucked it into a split in the limb, and sap sealed it with a sigh. By morning it had become the first clasping bough, shaped for arms, paws, and sleep. Ever since, koalas know home by the branch that holds back.
