Under the sharp cinnamon smell of porch candles, Rook carried his creased candy map with both paws, careful not to bend the corner marked Sweets Here. He had drawn the route himself with berry ink, adding Ghosty Oak, three zigzags, and one very important pumpkin face that looked almost polite. Every time a doorbell ding-donged, his whiskers bounced. “Just one perfect loop,” he whispered, because a perfect loop deserved an audience.
The lane grew silly as he followed it. A bat on a roof sneezed glitter. A jack-o’-lantern hiccupped blue smoke. Even the bare trees seemed to wave their twiggy fingers as if they knew the punch line first. Rook stopped at the Candy Path sign, smoothed the map flat, and tapped the final X.
That was when the map giggled. Not Rook—the paper. The dotted trail wriggled into tiny arrows, and the pumpkin face opened its inky mouth to shout, “Not candy first. Company first!” From every little house sketched on the map came a squeak, a hoot, or a squeal of laughter, as if the paper had been saving all the neighborhood’s giggles in its folds.
Rook laughed so hard his hat star wobbled. He held the map high, and the real doors opened one by one, spilling friends onto the curling road. Next time you spot that polite pumpkin face on Rook’s map, try not to laugh before the final X marked Sweets Here.
