🎨 How to color it

Color the squirrel’s fur chestnut brown, the woven basket honey tan, the acorns warm beige with dark brown caps, and the falling leaves in maple red, gold, and olive green. Use sharp colored pencils for the basket weave and acorn caps, then switch to smooth side-strokes on the squirrel’s big tail and the tall tree trunks. Try making the leaves closest to the squirrel brightest, as if a small sunbeam is following his secret delivery.

Every day, Wexley trotted the rootwood trail with his basket bumping his hip: thunk, hush, thunk. He wanted the high hollow stocked before the first frost glazed the moss silver. He counted acorns by feel—the smooth fat ones for soup, the tiny rattlers for cake—while dry leaves clicked like little bones overhead.

Until one day, a pale moth the size of his paw drifted from a split root and landed on his best acorn. Its wings smelled faintly of rain and old bark. “Not that one,” Wexley whispered, but the moth lifted, crossed the path, and vanished into a narrow burrow. Because of that, Wexley followed. Because of that, he found a dark den where three field mice slept beside an empty seed cup.

At last, Wexley set down the best acorn, then two more, and hurried away before whiskers twitched. By evening his own hollow was not quite full, yet the trail seemed wider under the gold leaves. If you spot him mid-trot, guess which acorn he is carrying for someone who will never know.
