Under the cloud playroom’s cottony roof, Vera patted a plain paper star hidden beneath her paw. She wanted to tuck it into the left cloud before snack bells jingled, because tiny Pomp the moth loved napping where things sparkled. The air smelled like berry chalk, and Vera’s little horn made a squeak-squeak against the floor.
She hopped up, stuck the star in place, and sat very straight. Then she slid her tail over the glue pot like nothing had happened. “Who, me?” she peeped, while the rainbow above her gave a wiggly, stripey shiver.
The twist was that the right cloud had been watching with its own star already glowing. It puffed out a soft poof and flashed back: thank you. Next time you see Vera’s round smile under those rainbow stripes, can you spot the star she gave away when nobody was looking?
