Every day, when the storm bellows rolled over the thunder shelf, Soren climbed to the highest floating crag and pressed all four claws into the stone. He wanted the rock to ring the noon note, the sound that told wandering clouds they had reached home. Rain smelled like cold tin. His wings snapped in the wind, but the crag only shivered.
Until one day, a white bolt struck so close that every scale on his neck flashed silver. Because of that, Soren leaped back, and because of that, the stone under his front claw cracked open with a soft, hollow chime. Not a break—a seam. Inside, where nobody had thought to look, rested a tiny nest of clear thunder-eggs, humming the missing note. “You were under me?” Soren whispered.
He folded his wings around the crag, not to hide the eggs, but to warm them from the rushing sky. The clouds gathered lower, listening. At last the whole shelf rang, deep and gentle, and Soren felt the note move through his bones as if the storm had saved a place just his shape. Next time you see his claws on that jagged stone, can you keep the secret of the cold tin rain?
