🎨 How to color it

Color the Wildcats Gym pennant royal blue, the volleyballs bright white with golden yellow stripes, the wooden wall tan, and the back-to-school backpack cherry red. Use sharp colored pencils for the net squares, scoreboard numbers, and wood-grain lines, then switch to markers for the big court panels and bleachers. Try making each volleyball’s motion lines a pale sky blue so the whole gym feels fast and buzzy.

Every afternoon, the Wildcats raced into the gym while the wall clock clicked toward four, and Quinn tapped the tiny silver whistle in his pocket before joining the passing line. He never blew it. It had belonged to his cousin, who said it was for “finding the moment,” and Quinn was saving that moment for when the court finally felt like his.

Until one day, Coach Vega rolled out three practice balls at once, then hurried to help a squeaky bleacher that had trapped a shoelace. Because of that, the drill kept moving without a captain. Because of THAT, balls ricocheted like popcorn—thump, slap, boing—past the net, under elbows, toward the open exit doors.

Quinn felt the whistle’s cool edge and sprinted to center court. One sharp tweet sliced through sneaker squeaks and rubbery ball thuds. “Freeze, then feed!” he called. Hands caught, knees bent, and passes began to travel in clean bright arcs. At last Quinn tucked the whistle away, not as a charm, but as proof: with the Wildcats roaring around him, he had found the moment. Can you spot the place where three balls are still buzzing from Quinn’s whistle run?
