Every evening, Kovo clipped on his little flower clasp and galloped through Lantern Hollow, swish-swish, kicking dry leaves higher than his horns. He wanted to be first to the pumpkin stump before the bats woke up, but the clasp always tugged loose, and he had to stop, puffing warm fog into the cool air. One night, the clasp fell into a crack beside a grinning pumpkin.
Kovo stamped once, ready to race on, until the moon slid out like a silver horn. The clasp winked back from the crack, not lost at all, but pointing to a tiny bat trapped under a curled leaf. “Hold still,” Kovo whispered. He waited, waited, waited while the leaf crackled, then lifted it with one careful horn. The bat zipped free, squeak-squeak, and Kovo trotted home last but glowing. Next time you see his flower clasp, can you keep the secret of why Kovo waited under the moon?
