Every day, Pippa pressed her tiny horn to the inside of her shell and hummed, bum-bum, bum-bum, to the warm fern nursery. The shell smelled like rain-wet stone. She wanted someone to hear the song before it disappeared.

Until one day, tap-tap, something answered from outside. A silver moon-moth had landed on the spotted shell. Because of that, Pippa hummed louder, and the shell cracked like snapping twigs. Because of that, the song rolled out into the grass, waking beetles, flowers, and sleepy leaves. “I heard you,” whispered the moth.

Until finally, Pippa poked her smiling face into the light and shared her bum-bum song with everyone. Next time you see those ferns around her shell, can you hear the tiny chorus answering back?
