Every morning, Tessa carried a pocketful of nails to the hillside pasture and hammered together inventions for Juniper, her nosy chestnut horse. She wanted to make a “snack bell” from bent horseshoes and bottle caps, but it only clunked like a boot in mud. Juniper watched over the rail fence, blowing warm hay-breath into Tessa’s hair until her braid stuck straight up.
Until one day, the best bottle cap vanished. Because of that, Tessa crawled under the fence, checked the grass, and found a round hole in the top of the oldest post. Because of THAT, she poked inside with a twig and heard a bright ting-ting-ting. “Juniper, you rascal,” she whispered. Out came the cap, three pebbles, and a tiny tin bell wedged where nobody had thought to look.
Tessa tied the bell beneath her horseshoe contraption, shook it once, and the pasture rang like a spoon on a jam jar. Juniper tossed her mane as if she had built it herself. Tessa laughed, proud of every crooked knot and scratched-up nail. Next time you spot the fence posts near Juniper, guess which one still keeps secrets with a ting-ting-ting.
