🎨 How to color it

Try a smoky gray coat for the wolf, sandy tan for the dry grasses, weathered brown for the fallen branch, and soft blue-green hills in the distance. Use short, sharp pencil strokes along the wolf’s neck, tail, and chest tufts so the fur follows the direction of the drawn lines. Add a pale sunrise gradient behind the rolling hills to make those tall ears and lifted paw stand out.

The story behind this coloring page

Hazel’s Waiting Game — Every evening, when the wind combed the reed meadow, Hazel invented a game called Don’t Blink First. Read the full story →

Every evening, when the wind combed the reed meadow, Hazel invented a game called Don’t Blink First. She would freeze beside the fallen branch, nose full of dust and dry grass, waiting for something in the meadow to make the first ridiculous sound. Crickets creaked. Seed heads tickled her whiskers. Hazel did not blink.

Until one day, the meadow stayed too quiet. Because of that, Hazel added a rule: she must step over the branch one paw at a time and wait after each step. Because of THAT, she heard a tiny glurp under the roots, then a bigger bloop that shook the grass. “Aha,” she whispered, trying not to laugh.

Finally, after seven slow paw-lifts and one itchy ear, the hidden mudspring burped so loudly that three grasshoppers sprang straight up like popcorn. Hazel’s patience had won her the meadow’s silliest secret. Next time you spot her raised paw by the branch, can you guess whether the next sound will be glurp, bloop, or the first ridiculous sound?
