Before the first bell, Hazel taped paper to two broom handles and marched to the school curb. She wanted every new bus rider to see a welcome before they saw the tall doors. The morning smelled like wet sidewalk and marker ink. Her pom-poms sat like fluffy fireworks by her shoes while she wrote big, bouncy words. “Go, new friends!” she whispered, and gave the empty street a practice grin.
The bus rumbled closer, whee-whee went its brakes. Then a tiny orange street-sweeper rolled up first, brushing leaves into a neat little swirl. The driver lifted one mitten and tapped his horn: peep-peep-pep! Hazel laughed and turned her sign so he could read it too. He pointed to the bus behind him, and every window filled with waving hands. No one had seen Hazel arrive early, but the whole curb felt louder with welcome. Next time you spot a bus by a school door, can you find the first peep-peep-pep?
