A red mitten was all Elsie needed before ski class. She had the left one, warm and woolly, but the right one had vanished from the hook by the stove. Outside, the lodge smelled like pine smoke, and the snow made tiny squeaks under her boots. Elsie stepped past the door, farther than she had gone alone all morning. A cold sprinkle slipped into one boot. She almost turned back.
Then—tok, tok. The old crossed skis by the path knocked together, though no wind blew. Elsie touched one smooth wooden ski and heard a small jingle inside. “Hello?” she whispered. From a narrow crack slid her red mitten, carrying a tiny brass bell tied with blue thread. The ski teacher laughed softly. “First-run bells hide for brave beginners.” Elsie tucked the bell inside her mitten and skied back to the warm porch changed by one small step. Next time you see those crossed skis, can you spot where the secret went tok, tok?
