Under the porch steps, Tansy hid a teal bandana covered in bones and paw prints. She wanted one grand rustle for her after-supper parade, the kind that made every ear in the lane perk up. So, when the wind went whoosh down the hill, she slipped through the gate and trotted toward the creek trail, nose full of cold dirt and acorn dust.
At the big oak, a tiny voice squeaked, “Psst. Not those.” A field mouse in a seed-cap hat pointed to three curled leaves stuck in the roots. Tansy tugged them free, but one burr grabbed her ear fur—prick, pull, ouch. The mouse showed her how to tuck the leaves behind her ear, where they clacked softly like little wooden spoons.
Tansy raced home with the secret sound bouncing beside her cheek. She could have kept it for the parade. Instead, she shook her head once at the gate, scattering two leaves to the kittens and one to the mail crow, until the whole lane went click-rustle-whoosh. If you spot her proud smile, you’ll know she still has the best part of the whoosh tucked close.
