🎨 How to color it

Try a honey-gold coat for the puppy, a cherry-red collar with a silver tag, a neon yellow tennis ball, and soft pink daisies in the grass. Use sharp colored pencils for the fur strokes around the ears, chest, and legs, then switch to smoother layers on the round tennis ball. For a mischievous twist, make the collar tag extra shiny with a tiny white highlight, as if it is hiding a secret message.

Behind the tall snapdragons, a small jingle went tink-tink against Juniper’s chest. She had carried the dented tag all morning, nudging it with her nose, then sitting up straight whenever the garden gate clicked. The tag was not shiny, not round, and not impressive, but it had been on her collar the first time she dared to step off the porch. Now she wanted to greet the big striped ball without scooting backward into the daisies.

The ball waited in the dirt, smelling of rubber, rain, and somebody’s muddy shoe. Juniper leaned close. Tink-tink. She leaned closer. Tink-tink-tink. From under a leaf pot came three beetles wearing pollen like yellow hats. “Again, please,” said the smallest one. “You’re keeping perfect time.”

Juniper blinked, then gave one careful wag. The tag jingled, the beetles tapped seed shells, and the ball rolled a tiny inch as if joining the band. First-time courage felt less like a roar and more like a silly garden song. If you spot Juniper sitting tall by that ball, you may know exactly who is waiting for the next tink-tink.
