🎨 How to color it

Color her hoodie coral red, her backward cap teal, the boombox silver and charcoal, and the street signs sunny yellow with navy arrows. Use sharp colored pencils for the small hoodie patches, shoelaces, cassette buttons, and sign borders, then switch to markers for the wide pants and sweatshirt. Try making each starburst a different neon shade so the music looks like it is bursting out from the boombox.

The story behind this coloring page

Under the last pink light, Raya tapped one sneaker on the transit lane stripe and counted the clicks in her throat. She wanted to finish her secret routine before anyone came by: slide, dip, wrist flick, freeze. The air smelled like warm pavement and rain hiding in the gutters. Then a broom made of soft copper wires whispered shhh-shhh behind the signpost.

A woman no taller than the boombox stepped from the shadow, sweeping loose sounds into a tin pan: a bus sigh, a bottle clink, a pigeon’s flap. “The city is too tired to point home,” she said. The arrows on the signs drooped blankly. Raya did not ask for applause. She turned the boombox low and danced her brightest steps where only the sweeper could see, sending bass thumps up the pole like a heartbeat.

One arrow lifted. Then another. The star-shaped cracks of sound around her flashed open, and every sign along the block tipped toward the beat. Since that evening, city arrows have leaned toward music first, so lost feet can find a rhythm before they find a street; next time you spot those sharp little bursts around Raya, keep the secret of the beat nobody saw.
