🎨 How to color it

Color the teacher’s dress buttercup yellow, the smiling tambourine peach with silver jingles, the staff board pale green, and the floating music notes sky blue. Use chunky crayons for the big dress, board, and rug shapes, and help your child trace gently around the tiny stars and shelf instruments if they want to stay inside the lines. Try making every jingle around the tambourine a different bright color, like a secret rainbow that only appears when the song shakes.

Behind the tall music board, Nell tucked paper circles, ribbon scraps, and a pie tin into her lap. She wanted to make a rhythm-maker before the morning song began, but her first tap went thup, thup, thup—soft as socks on carpet. The classroom smelled like chalk dust and wooden blocks. “It needs a secret,” whispered Nell, peeking under books, inside the pencil cup, even beneath the xylophone keys.

At last, her finger bumped the chalk tray. Tinkle! Out rolled tiny silver rings no one remembered putting there. Nell tied each one around the pie tin’s edge with careful knots. When she shook it, the room answered shing-a-ling, bright as window light. Everyone’s feet bounced on the rug, and Nell held her handmade music-maker high. Ever since that morning, tambourines have worn little bells around their edges, proud to tell the secret hiding in every shake—can you spot the bell-rim Nell made?
