🎨 How to color it

Color the owl in warm tawny brown, the jack-o’-lantern in bright pumpkin orange, the fence in weathered gray-brown, and the oak leaves in copper and gold. Use sharp colored pencils for the owl’s layered feathers and the fence’s wood grain, then fill the pumpkin’s broad ribs with smooth strokes. Try making the carved eyes glow pale yellow, as if the owl’s post has become a tiny autumn watchtower.

Every evening, Nevin rolled beside the pasture rail and practiced his secret challenge: build a topper tall enough for an owl, using only things the wind dropped. He wedged acorns under a stump, looped a vine around his stem, and listened to dry leaves skitter like paper mice. No owl ever came. Until one day, a great soft whoof landed above him, and two round eyes blinked down. “I ordered a statue,” Nevin squeaked, “not a supervisor.”

Because of that, the post wobbled and his vine knot slipped. Because of that, the owl gave one offended hop, bumping the acorns into place with a clack-clack-clack. Nevin’s carved grin widened; he had made a perch after all, just with an accidental assistant. Finally, the owl settled like a feathered crown, and Nevin glowed so proudly his crooked tooth shone. Next time a leaf skitters by the pasture rail, check who is smirking under the owl.
