Under the salt-bright moon, Ludo rolled across the warm sand toward the old cove chest, determined to lift its lid before the tide tickled his stem. The palms clacked like wooden spoons overhead, and a little ship bobbed beyond the reef with a skull on its sail. Ludo set his vine-curl mustache, hooked his leafy bandana tight, and whispered, “Just one peek.” The brass lock smelled green and salty, and the boards hummed under his round feet.
He nudged. He bounced. He pressed with both pumpkin cheeks until the lid rose with a creak that sounded like a sea gull stretching. Gold coins winked inside, but before Ludo could count even three, a silver pearl rolled up, tapped his boot, and popped open like a tiny eye. Out swam a fish made of moonlight, no bigger than his nose. It circled the pearls, the coins, and the little diamond, leaving glowing dots in the air.
Then Ludo saw it: the treasure was not for keeping. It was a map. The pearl-fish had been waiting for someone brave enough to open the chest so it could point the ship through the safe waves. Ludo stood tall on the lid, grin wide as a crescent, while the moon-map shimmered below. Next time you spot the pearls by the lock, see if their dots still lead across the salt-bright moon.
