Under the squeaky bamboo, Bozu patted his favorite flat board. It looked like a swing seat, but to him it was a secret snack stand. He had tucked one shiny pebble under it for a sign that said, “Free crunches.” The ropes creaked, ee-ee, while warm leaves smelled green and sweet.
Bozu climbed on, wiggled his paws, and whispered, “No tasting yet.” The board swished forward. Then back. Then forward again, faster, until a shower of tiny bamboo leaves slid off the branches and landed in a neat pile below.
That was when the beetles marched out. They had been waiting under the board with little leaf bowls! Bozu giggled so hard the ropes hiccuped. He nudged the leaf pile toward them and kept only one sprig for himself. Next time you see his paws curled on that seat, can you spot the secret snack stand?
