🎨 How to color it

Color the kiwi flesh bright chartreuse, the fuzzy skins warm brown, the tiny seed rings black, and the big leaf a deep leafy green. Use sharp colored pencils for the thin seed ovals and radiating lines, then switch to light, scratchy strokes around the kiwi skins to keep their fuzz visible. Try making one sliced center glow yellow-green near the middle and fade darker toward the rind, as if it is holding a hidden lantern.

Under the cool stone floor of the fruit cellar, Kira rolled from crate to crate, listening for a place that answered her tap. Plink on apples, thunk on melons, hush on sacks of flour. She wanted one corner to sound like hers. Instead, the cellar smelled of dust, straw, and faraway rain, and every shadow seemed to belong to someone else.

Near the lowest shelf, a beetle porter muttered, “Nobody checks the brown ones.” Kira froze. The brown ones meant her kind, fuzzy and quiet, stacked behind the onion ropes. She nudged a loose stem aside and found a thin green gleam hiding under the ring of tiny black seeds inside a split kiwi. It hummed like a cricket in summer grass.

Kira pressed close. The gleam spread from seed to seed until the whole fruit shone soft green, not bright enough to boast, just bright enough to say, here. All the kiwis warmed around her, lantern after lantern under their brown coats. Ever since, every kiwi keeps a secret green room inside, and if you spot the seed rings, you may have found the door Kira first opened in the cool stone cellar.
