Every evening, after the clinic broom swished under the chairs, Etta lined up the tongue sticks, straightened the clipboards, and set herself one tiny challenge: listen through one full heartbeat without pulling the stethoscope away. The metal was always moon-cold on her ears. Thump-thump. She could count to two, then her fingers jumped.
Until one night, the lights blinked out. Rain tapped the windows like a hundred nervous nails, and from the exam room came a small voice: “Is the doctor still here?” Because of that, Etta picked up her stethoscope. Because of that, she heard not just her own breath, but the child’s quick, fluttery thump-thump waiting in the dark.
Finally, Etta counted one brave breath, then another, until the heartbeat sounded like a tiny drum walking home. When the lights hummed back, she was still listening. Next time you notice the stethoscope at her shoulders, can you hear the moon-cold thump-thump too?
