Every night, Arden climbed to the prism gorge and gave himself the same small challenge: hold one note until the last echo thinned to silence. The rocks smelled of cold rain and iron, and the river below unspooled its dark ribbon without applause. Until one night, a cloud covered every star halfway through his breath.
Because of that, Arden kept singing into blackness longer than he ever had. Because of that, the gorge began to answer in pieces: a blue chip of sound, a gold shiver, a silver thread trembling inside the stone. He did not stop when his throat ached. At last the cloud opened, and one hidden star poured through the crystal walls, turning his patient note into a quiet cathedral of light. The river carried it away, the same dark ribbon, now stitched with starlight.
