Lila held the door frame with one hand. She wanted that hat before the sun climbed higher, but the curving path looked longer than it had yesterday.

She stepped down. Crunch, crunch, went the dry grass. A burr caught her sock, and she made a tiny face, but kept going to the big pine. No hat. Then the camper step gave a soft tap-tap in the breeze. Under it, where nobody ever looked, sat her red hat with a pinecone tucked inside like a present. “I did it,” Lila whispered.
