🎨 How to color it

Give the T. rex olive green skin with tan striping, the canyon cliffs warm sandstone orange, the cycads deep fern green, and the scattered stones cool gray. Use sharp colored pencils for the teeth, claws, skin wrinkles, and many cycad fronds, then switch to broader side-strokes on the open cliff faces. Try making the far canyon paler and bluer than the foreground so the T. rex feels huge against a deep desert pass.

Between red cliffs still warm from morning sun, Kellan pressed one three-toed foot into damp sand and hummed, “Mmm-rum.” The canyon answered softly, rum-rum, from wall to wall. He had just invented a game: step, sound, listen. Pebbles clicked under his claws; dry cycad leaves brushed his knees with a papery hiss.

He tried a higher note beside a flat stone, then a long one near a spiky palm. Each place gave the sound a different shape. “Your turn, canyon,” Kellan whispered. Wind slid through cracks like a flute, and his chest filled so brightly he could hardly hold the joy inside.

Then he noticed the surprise: tiny beetles were crossing each fresh footprint like little musicians on a stage. Their shells tapped tick-tick-tick along the edges, adding a beat to every rum and hum. Kellan stepped more gently after that, leaving roomy prints in the sand, and the canyon, the beetles, and the big green singer shared the new game between red cliffs still warm from morning sun.
