Until one night, a storm-blue engine with no headlights slid from an alley, roaring like brass drums under rain. Because of that, Elio chased its thunder past shuttered shops; because of that, every swirl on his doors seemed to answer, buzzing through chrome, rubber, and warm asphalt. At the bridge, the stranger vanished into traffic, but the beat stayed in Elio’s wheels. Finally, he turned back laughing, exactly in tune, counting tire hums between streetlights.
