At first light, Calder stamped through the reed pools and named his new game Wake-Run: leap before the last ring touched the mud, tail high, claws flashing, breath tasting of wet fern and mineral mist. He bounded faster, reading each swirl as a path, each splash as a drumbeat, until the lagoon seemed to race beside him. Then a silver fish broke the surface and made a perfect spiral inside his own, as if it had been playing from below all along. Calder laughed, changed direction, and the water answered; every reed, ripple, and sail-shadow said he was exactly where he belonged.
