Under a pale little sun, Gus tapped three buttons on his rover and whispered, “Find the funniest rock.” The rover rolled over the dusty valley with a brrrp-brrrp-brrrp, sniffing minerals and sending polite beeps back to his helmet. Gus had packed six official sample bags and one unofficial whoopee cushion, because science deserved choices.
The rover stopped between two flat stones and wiggled its camera mast. Gus expected a pebble shaped like a nose, or maybe a crater that looked like soup. Instead, the rover pointed its scanner at its own fresh tire track. The zigzag groove sparkled with tiny blue dots, tucked in the pressed dust where nobody ever looked. When Gus leaned close, the dots blinked in rhythm: ha-ha-ha, ha-ha-ha.
Then the valley answered. The far craters flashed back, the low clouds blushed silver, and every wheel mark behind the rover became a line in a giant joke written across the ground. Gus opened his radio so the orbiting crew could hear the dusty laughter. If you follow the tracks with your eyes, you might catch the same brrrp-brrrp joke starting all over again.
