🎨 How to color it

Color the ship’s hull deep navy, the stacked containers in brick red, mustard yellow, and teal, and the bridge windows a pale sky blue. Use sharp colored pencils for the many narrow container stripes and window rows, then switch to broader marker strokes for the wide hull panels and waves. Try giving each wave band a slightly different blue-green shade so the ship looks like it is plowing through a mischievous, moving sea.

By the third gull-squawk after breakfast, Zadie had set herself a private challenge: find the captain’s hidden pattern in the cargo stacks before the cocoa in her mug stopped steaming. The deck smelled of salt, rope, and warm metal. Rows of containers rose around her like giant building blocks, each one humming softly with the ship’s engines. “No peeking at the manifest,” she told her pencil, which had already rolled into a scupper twice.

She counted red-blue-red, tapped every fifth yellow corner, and tried reading the stacks backward from the bridge windows. The sea slapped the hull with a gloomp-gloomp that sounded suspiciously like laughing. A crane hook swung overhead, empty and proud, while Zadie’s notebook filled with arrows, question marks, and one drawing of the first mate as a walrus.

Then the sun slid out from a cloud, and the containers cast one long shadow across the deck: not a code, not a map, but a lopsided smiley face with a smokestack nose. From the bridge, Captain Bix called, “Found it?” Zadie bowed to the grinning shadow and saluted the sea. Next time you see those tall stacks and rolling waves, check whether the ship is still keeping its joke after the third gull-squawk.
