Between resin-sweet pines and cold stone, Soren invented a game: count only the clouds that looked like they were leaving. One, a curled tail; two, a long fish; three, a sleeping paw. The game grew wider than the valley, pulling his gaze over every ridge and silver seam of snow. Then a pinecone dropped with a dry click, and its shadow made the same shapes on the rock below. The sky had been counting earth all along. Soren stood very still, while cloud, cone, cliff, and wolf kept score together.
