Under the biggest speckled mushroom in the glade, Sonna pressed her claw to a spool of vine-thread no thicker than a beetle’s whisker. She had dyed it herself with berry juice, crushed marigold, wet moss, and one purple petal that smelled like rain. All afternoon she had been trying to weave a shade-roof for her workbench, but the sun kept slipping through the leaves and warming her wax pots into puddles.
“Hold still, little thread,” she whispered. The thread did not. A soft wind lifted it, loop by loop, over the mushroom cap. Sonna caught one end in her beak and tucked the other into the grass, then bent each color across the sky with careful pulls. The vine-thread stretched without snapping, humming like a sleepy bee. When she tied the final knot, the whole glade cooled beneath a glowing arch.
Ever since that evening, rainbows have curved over mushroom rings after sun and rain meet, because Sonna made the first one by hand. If you spot the owl on her tall mushroom, see if her proud little knot is still hiding where the colors begin.
