🎨 How to color it

Color the horse a warm chestnut, the shaggy mane a deep espresso brown, the wooden stall boards honey tan, and the hay bales golden yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the mane strands, rope coils, hay lines, and wood grain, then switch to broader strokes on the door panels. Add one mischievous touch by making the halter bright teal so it pops against all that barn wood.

The Stable’s Secret Inspector — The oat cart always squeaked past the tack room after the last sun stripe climbed off the floor. Read the full story →

The oat cart always squeaked past the tack room after the last sun stripe climbed off the floor. Orson waited at his stall door, breathing in dust, leather, and sweet hay, while the hanging rope made tiny scratch-scratch sounds against its peg. He tapped the latch with his lip. Clink. Then he tapped it again, just because clinks sounded official.

A round white duck waddled out from under the saddle blanket with a pencil tucked behind one wing. “Inspection,” she said. “I count backward.” She squinted at the fork, the window, the hay bales, and Orson’s nose. “Seven prongs, two clouds, four knots, one magnificent sniff.” Orson snorted so hard a straw flipped onto his forelock.

By the time the oat cart rolled in, everyone was waiting for the duck’s final report. She stamped the floor with one muddy foot. “This stable is exactly where it belongs.” Orson took his oats, the duck took one fallen grain, and the tack room smelled like leather, hay, and belonging. Next time you notice his official clink, can you spot the place where the inspector might be hiding?
