High above the pine tops, where the air smelled like cold sugar and spruce, Quibble nudged his little sleigh through puff after puff of snow. He had packed every present snugly, but what he really wanted was to deliver the biggest laugh before moonrise. Whenever the sleigh runners curled through a cloud, the gift bags gave a soft bump-bump, and Quibble practiced his grand greeting: “Ho-ho—snort!”
The snowflakes began falling in neat, polite stars. Then one landed on Quibble’s nose and said, “Pardon me,” in a tiny squeak. Another sneezed glitter. A third bounced off a ribbon and hiccuped so hard it spun like a wagon wheel. Quibble blinked his glossy eyes. The cloud was not making snow at all—it was full of snowflake comedians rehearsing their winter show.
Quibble laughed so loudly that his scarf stripes wiggled. The presents rattled, the sleigh dots seemed to dance, and the shy snowflakes tumbled out to perform for every rooftop below. If you follow the curliest runner next time, you might hear one small hiccup joining Quibble’s grand “Ho-ho—snort!”
