Every day after breakfast, Fenn padded through the sun meadow and listened for the tiny noon chime. It rang once—ting!—just as the daisies opened, but he never found its source. He checked hollow stems, warm stones, and the backs of leaves silvered with dew. One day the chime sounded early, soft as a spoon tapping glass, and Mama Bear suddenly sneezed.
Because of that, Fenn climbed into her lap to inspect her nose. Because of that, a speck of gold slipped from her whiskers and landed on his paw. It was not pollen. It was a sunseed, smooth and warm, hidden where nobody had thought to look, carried there from the highest flower by the morning wind.
“Can we plant it?” Fenn whispered. Mama pressed her nose to his, and the seed chimed between them. They tucked it into the meadow’s bare patch, and by evening every daisy turned its face toward that spot, as if waiting for a secret to grow. Next time you see their noses almost touching, see if you can keep from hearing that tiny noon chime.
