🎨 How to color it

Give the firefighter’s gear a bright red, the doctor’s coat a clean white with a teal stethoscope, the teacher’s apple a shiny green, and the mail carrier’s satchel a warm tan. Use sharp colored pencils for the porch railings, window panes, hose ridges, and the small MAIL letters so the neat neighborhood details stay crisp. Try a late-afternoon glow by shading the sidewalk pale peach and adding soft blue shadows under each helper’s shoes.

The story behind this coloring page

The Letter Under the Apple — By the last mailbox on Willowbend Lane, Tobin had one envelope left and no house number to match it. Read the full story →

By the last mailbox on Willowbend Lane, Tobin had one envelope left and no house number to match it. The paper smelled faintly of crayons and rain, and the front said only, For the helper who comes when everyone needs them. Tobin could have tucked it back in his satchel, safe and dry. Instead, he crossed the warm sidewalk to ask the firefighter rinsing a hose, the doctor locking his clinic bag, and Ms. Vale, the teacher, who was carrying books and a green apple.

Here’s the secret: none of them knew. The firefighter checked under her helmet badge. The doctor turned his stethoscope case inside out. Ms. Vale laughed and said, “Try the place nobody looks when they’re in a hurry.” Tobin paid for the clue with a scuffed shoe and a splashed sock when he stepped around the hose, but he crouched beside the teacher’s dropped apple anyway. Under it lay a tiny folded map, sticky with juice.

The map led all four helpers back to the mail satchel. In the smallest side pocket, behind the spare stamps, waited four thank-you notes from the kids on the block—one for each of them, and one addressed to Tobin by name. The envelope hadn’t been lost; it had been waiting for the whole neighborhood to stand together. If you spot the apple and the satchel, you’ll know exactly where the secret was hiding by the last mailbox on Willowbend Lane.
