Every evening, when the wind snapped salty foam across Gullstep Beach, Zuri pushed sticks and seaweed off the hatchling trail with her flippers. She wanted the tiny turtles to reach the water without bumping into the tangles that scraped and hissed in the dark. One day, a storm shoved a mountain of kelp onto the sand, and every gull complained from the dunes.
Because of that, Zuri dug faster than the crabs could count. Because of that, her flipper knocked a dull scallop shell nobody had bothered to lift. Inside, something clicked—a smooth pearl button stamped with the mark of the rescue boat’s missing beacon. “No one saw it fall here!” Zuri shouted over the boom of waves.
She could have waited for cheers, but the tide was already climbing. Zuri dragged the heavy shell to the lantern post and tapped the button until a blue light blinked through the spray. Far offshore, the rescue boat answered with one bright flash. By morning, the hatchling trail was clear, the beacon was safe, and if you follow Zuri’s sandy tracks next time, you might find the plain shell nobody checked.
