🎨 How to color it

Color the large maple leaf amber orange, the oak leaves golden brown, the acorn caps chestnut, and the September plaque soft cream. Use sharp colored pencils for the tight spiral curls, small berries, and crisscross acorn caps, then switch to smoother strokes on the broad leaf sections. Try making the curving wind ribbons fade from pale blue to lavender so the warm leaves look as if they are floating through cool September air.

Under the park’s oldest maple, Tessa pressed a twig into damp September dirt and drew a curling line around one fallen leaf. The air smelled like rain and acorn shells. She had just invented Wind Lines: trace a path, place an acorn at each bend, and guess where the next leaf would land. Scratch, curve, dot. Scratch, curve, dot.

By the third round, her hands were brown at the fingertips and her game had grown into a whole map. Oak leaves became islands. Maple points became arrows. Tiny berries marked secret stations. “This one goes here,” she whispered, setting an acorn cap beside a spiral.

Then a breeze slid through the grove with a papery shiver. It lifted one narrow leaf, turned it twice, and laid it exactly across the line Tessa had not finished yet. She sat very still. The wind was playing too. Tessa smiled and drew around the new leaf, adding one more proud handmade curve to the game of Wind Lines; next time you see the swirls and acorns, can you tell which moves were hers and which belonged to September?
