Under the cold moon, Bixby patted a pumpkin stem that curled like a question mark. Tap-tap. Tap-tap. He wanted it to answer before the night bugs finished their buzzy song. The pumpkin only sat in the leaves, smelling like dirt and cinnamon, with bare trees scratching softly in the wind.
Bixby waited. He made silly faces at the stars. He hung upside down from a branch and counted three pebbles twice. The pumpkin’s grin glowed—plink!—and a hidden cricket band chirped from inside. “I knew you had music,” Bixby squeaked. Next time you see that curly stem, can you guess which note it is holding?
