🎨 How to color it

Give the drummer’s jacket a bright parade red, the feathered hat plume a snowy white, the drum a polished silver, and the hanging bunting a mix of navy and gold. Use sharp colored pencils for the jacket buttons, drum laces, tiny confetti pieces, and the narrow flagpoles so those small shapes stay crisp. Try making the crowd soft gray-blue and the main drummer warm and bold, so the beat looks like it is stepping right out of the street.

Under the harbor bunting, Casey tapped the same roll again and again, hunting for the one echo that would make the drum sound round as a bell. The parade line waited behind the fish market, smelling of brass polish, popcorn, and cold sea air. Then came an extra tap: not from Casey’s sticks, not from the snare beside them, but from a storm drain by the curb. Tap-tap… hush.

Casey stepped out of the safe chalk mark where drummers were supposed to stand. The drum strap pulled hard on one shoulder, and a silver button popped from the red jacket and bounced into a puddle. By the drain sat a small green crab, clicking one claw against a loose bottle cap. “You’re late,” it whispered, as if parades often asked crabs for advice. Behind the grate, the dark tunnel answered with a deep, perfect boom.

Casey tucked the bottle cap into the drum rim and hurried back as the flags lifted. The first roll rang bright, then boomed from the tunnel, then clicked with the crab’s tiny secret beat. The whole band found it at once, and Casey no longer felt like the smallest marcher in the line. Next time you see the drummer stepping under the confetti, listen for the hidden tap that made the harbor walk feel like home.
